Abstract
Antibacterial activities of various essential oils against E. coli and oral bacteria including S. mutans, L. casei, S. epidermidis and K. pneumoniae were examined. Clove oil was selected as a potential antimicrobial plant oil against oral bacteria, because it showed the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Additionally the stability of antibacterial activities of clove oil at different pHs, temperatures and UV-exposures condition were investigated. Clove oil showed the same MIC at a wide range of pH 3-9. and temperature of 4-75oC. It was found that the antibacterial activities maintained under UV irradiation for 72 hr-exposure. Consequently it was found that clove oil can be used as an antibacterial agent against several oral bacteria.
